the mark

One solid. From the front its shadow is an A, from the side an X.

The name joins aeternus, Latin for eternal, to axis. A model’s answer shifts every time you ask; the line that judges it should not move. The mark is built around that line: the ax in axis.

from A to X

Flat, the mark is two strokes that rise from a baseline and cross on the axis. Where they cross decides the letter. Cross them at the very top and they make an A, bar and all. Lower the crossing and their ends come out above it, and the same two strokes are an X. The mark stops a little above the middle, where you can read both.

a few numbers

The flat mark is computed, not drawn. These values go into one short script, axmark.js, and every logo on this site comes out of it, the favicon included. The fold animation is the same function with its inputs moving.

the fold

On the home page the solid folds into the flat mark as you scroll. It turns to face you and loses its perspective, the light drains out until it is a single ink colour, and then the strokes move: the crossing drops, the bar settles, a gap opens where one stroke passes over the other, and the axis is drawn in last. Then the mark flies up into the header.
